The Misfits are a hardcore punk band originally fronted and founded by Glen Danzig.  During their earlier days the band went through quite a few labels before recording their "classic" album Walk Among Us in 1983 along with the EP Earth AD/Wolfs Blood (The band's first album Static Age was recorded in 1978 but wasn't released until 1997.  Danzig was moving towards a darker sound with a lot of edgier lyrics and disbanded the group to form Samhain.  The other members at the time Jerry Only and Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein went the opposite direction and formed a christian metal band.

Years later, Only and Doyle reformed the Misfits (much to the displeasure of Danzig) which resulted in a long legal battle over the rights to the name and back royalties.  The results of the case was the the two could uses the name Misfits and Danzig would share on the merchandising rights and royalties.  The newer line-up would go through many changes.  By the beginning of the 21st century Jerry Only was the longest tenured member.  He took over as the front man and brought along Marky Ramone (to play drums) and Dez Cadena as the guitarist.  This punk trio continued until Marky was replaced by former member Robo.  The new line-up is getting ready release some new material in the coming weeks.

The Misfits' sound is very interesting.  They sound like a faster paced version of The Damned (but without the complex musical chords).  Danzig's crooning style along with the raw and fast paced guitar and drums.  Early Misfits songs were only performed with electric organ, bass and drums.  As the band progressed the moved toward just guitar, bass and drums (an extra guitar was usually overdubbed in their studio recordings).  The songs pay homage to classic 50's and 60's horror and science fiction films and the clock in under at or under two minutes.  When the band reformed in 1996 the new line up moved strayed away from their original hardcore punk sound to a more commercially pleasing heavy metal.  But during the past eight years they have played a more stripped down punk sound.

A fun cheesy punk band that will have you tapping along.  If you enjoy hardcore punk then you'll want to check them out.  Even Danzig fans will love his old band.
