All things in blissful moderation!

Abbot Ale, one entry in Greene King Brewery's excellent stable of ales, lagers, bitters and stouts, is an exercise in moderation. The marketing on the can trumpets an enticing invitation, "An irresistible ale with masses of fruit character, a malty richness and superb hop balance." What a pleasant treat to find truth in advertising for a change!

The pour produces modest carbonation and a modest head with modest staying power over an attractive copper-golden colour. The aroma is rich and fruity with plenty of caramel tones to prompt a rush to the quaffing!

And the tasting, as I said, is precisely as advertised. A lovely balance between non-descript fruitiness (and I don't mean that negatively ... I only mean that I couldn't pin down the flavour to a specific fruit), lip-smacking caramel notes that were never so sweet as to be cloying, malt and hop balance with a bitterness in the after-taste that reminds the consumer that this is, after all, a well-crafted beer and not some no-name fruit juice!

At 5% alcohol/volume, we're not talking some wimpy light beer here that's closer to water than it is to a real beer but, on the other hand, nor are we talking something so powerful that it doesn't beg to followed up by a second try or perhaps even a third.

I'm definitely going back to the store for more of these! Highly recommended.
