Entertaining and humorous guide for the birder who has not yet seen everything

A must for the world-traveling birder, this entertaining book features the world's most "extraordinary" birds, at least according to bird experts Chandler and Couzens.

With exceptional full-page color photos of species chosen for looks, behavioral interest and cultural impact as much - or more- than for their rarity, the book has wide appeal.

Armchair birders will enjoy marveling over species like the Sociable Weaver, a little African bird that builds the world's largest nest in gregarious colonies that sometimes persist for more than a century. Or the tiny, arctic Ross' Gull, which imitates rodents to distract predators and migrates north for the winter. Or the famous Wandering Albatross that takes nearly a year to get its only-chick off the nest. Or the gorgeous blue bird-of-paradise, the weird flightless kiwi, or the prehistoric, sedentary hoatzin that live waterside but cannot swim or walk and hardly flies.

The one-page text is crisp, humorous and informative, providing a clear snapshot of the bird's lifecycle, status and peculiarities. Each entry also includes a color-keyed distribution map and a heading with the basics - size, incubation and fledging durations, habitat, conservation status, etc. A species checklist concludes the book.
