1984
This negative utopia called "1984" was written in 1948. The author, George Orwell, (whose real names were Eric Arthur Blair) was already dying of tuberculosis (in his native England) when it was completed. The book used metaphors to convey the author's perception of the Soviet Union. It has all the essences of a future read: at least in that 1948 when it was first published. 1984 is one of those eponymous books that is probably known more for its setting than the actual story. It's the originator of the 'Big Brother' that we have all become familiar with. It's now used to refer to overbearing government schemes which shows just how pervasive this book is in modern society. 1984 is a novel everyone should read. It is a scary parallel to what life is like today--although readers may feel that the government in 1984 is much more extreme, in truth, it isn't. Our government in the U.S. censors things they don't want citizens to see and can watch our every word and action when they feel the need to. George Orwell may seem singular to many people because the only two books he wrote that most people have read are this one and "Animal Farm" (BTW if you have not read "Animal Farm" and have read "1984" go read it now). Before I read 1984 I had heard so much hype, I'd seen the Apple commercial from the 80s, and I'd read countless other books that were described with the words "it's like 1984". None of those things prepared me for how haunting and eye opening this book is. I will probably never look at a TV the same as before. Instead, I will always be wondering if someone is watching me back. If you haven't read this book then I highly recommend that you do.
