365 and a Wake-Up Call: My Year In Vietnam is an excellent memoir. Frank Joliff earned a Silver Star for his service in Vietnam as an infantry medic. He is a hero. Joliff explains every detail about serving in Vietnam in this book. He writes about exciting things like trying to survive numerous mortar attacks. He recounts trudging through dangerous rice paddies and the jungle filled with booby traps. He writes about doing mundane details like guard duty stirring the excrement of other soldiers. There is a bond of brother hood that is established between combat veterans. I picked up on this clearly while reading. Joliff also writes about his experience of being on leave for one week Camp Zama in Japan. He also surfed at the beautiful Bondi Beach in Australia. He also spent three weeks of duty aboard a naval boat. The changes in venue are enjoyable to read. Joliff has a honest descriptive writing style. He makes me feel like I shared in these experiences with him, even though I have never done any of these things. He uses many military acronyms that I am not familiar with, but I got the gist of them by reading them in context. He does provide a glossary of these acronyms at the end of the book. I learned a new terminology with these acronyms. I feel smarter because of it. This is the best memoir I have read in a while. It is very entertaining.
