This One Will Keep You Reading

Amos Lassen

I do not know how he does it but Rick Reed keeps writing terrific books. His mind is definitely fertile. In "A Demon Inside" he gives us an eerie, macabre tale that will have you turning pages as quickly as you can and wanting to read it over again. This is the story of Hunter Beaumont and his grandmother's dying words to him. She told him to destroy Beaumont House, a place Hunter knew nothing about. When his grandmother died and his he was betrayed by his lover, Hunter decided to go to Beaumont House in Wisconsin even though he respected what his grandmother said to him. However, when he moved into the family home, he began to understand his grandmother's wishes. He realized that he was not alone in the house and nightmares begin.
It all begins in the winter of 1845 when we come across a gypsy giving her son permanent rest. We have yet to understand what this is all about but the tension is set up and we understand that we are in for an eerie read. Next we meet Hunter, an orphan who watched as his parents were murdered and the trauma of what he saw left with a loss of memory. He does, however, sense that is something very dark going on with his family. Hunter is then raised by his grandmother and when she dies, he is truly an orphan. He is alone in the world with only the promise that he made to Nana and the financial gain he inherited as a Beaumont. However that wealth raised problems for him especially with Jay Blackstock, the man who was his grandmother's doctor and his lover. Jay's betrayal left him shattered and broke.
Hunter travels to Beaumont house with his lawyer and he disobeys his promise to his grandmother and moves in and before we know it there are strange happenings and he becomes a victim of the house. But Hunter is also lucky that Michael Burt lives nearby and Michael tries to start a friendship with Hunter but Hunter has been so badly hurt by others that he shies away.
Michael is in the process of writing a book about the area and especially about a folk tale about a gypsy who lived there in the 19th century. From here you can begin to guess how everything comes together. Hunter is faced with a difficult decision. I really wanted to root for Hunter but there were times that he was so passive that I wanted to grab him and shake some sense into him. He had been so badly hurt in the past that he could understand when he was being shown some real affection but he does eventually understand that depending on others does not indicate weakness.
I read the book this afternoon and there was no chance that I would stop reading for any reason. Reed has the ability to pull the reader in and not let him go and in my mind that is the sign of a good writer. When you add that ability to a good narrative and an excellent way with words, then you get a Rick Reed book. I have read everything that Reed has written and have never been disappointed so I say to you, "Get this book, it is one helluva read".
