Barbara Tuchman's classic narrative of 14th-Century Europe is at turns enlightening and as long and twisting as the century it documents.        It was indeed a dark time, as Tuchman tells it.  The plague wiped out at least a third, perhaps more, of the population.  War between France and England, France and Italy, French royalty and its own people, and the Roman Church against itself, was endemic and unending.  Living conditions were harsh, and sympathy …

Barbara Tuchman sticks us right into the heart of the late Middle Ages, geographically and temporally, in her 1978 history "A Distant Mirror". Her talent for penetrating, minute analysis and ripping narrative are readily apparent in the opening pages. But as the book goes on, it is weighed down by a pedantic downbeat perspective and a failure to connect an overlong book thematically.    At the center of "A Distant Mirror" - and its key fault as I see it - is Tuchman's focus on …

A wonderful bit of historical writing. I am a big Tuchman fan but must admit that her ability to get "history acedemics" all in a snit, adds to my delight in her work. I have always felt that the common, everyday sort of guy, like myself, can glean much more from the so called "popular history writers" than they can from a stack of a thousand PhD rantings which end up filed away in a forgotten cabinet in must university storage room. I highly recommend this one.
