Hopefully, the beginning of a new series

It's always a thrill to get a book that might become the first of a series, and then enjoy it tremendously. That is what happened with me and this extremely well-written and exciting book. The protagonist is a police detective in Long Beach, California, who is called to investigate the brutal and grisly murder of a young female teacher.
