3.5 stars -- Good, but lacking something

I'm not exactly sure why this book lacks the "wow" factor that I reserve for a 4- or 5-star rating. The writing was good, the setting was very interesting (San Francisco and Atlanta, tony private schools, and Berkeley college). Current events from the period that the novel spans -- 1993 - 2009 -- adds to the realistic setting. I do not always look for perfect characters, always doing the right thing, or who are like me, but I do want to feel drawn to them. Something about … more

Moving story of love, loss, and family secrets

This was a marvelous story of sisterhood and the ties that bind siblings together. As Ruthie and Julia attempt to deal with the horror of their parents' deaths, they are struck again by the bizarre terms of their will. As these two sisters grow up separately, they are forced to make painful decisions about the nature of their relationship and their relation to the past.
