Have You Ever Been to Odyssey?

Adventures in Odyssey is a radio drama produced by Focus on the Family targeted at teaching Biblical values and life lessons to 8 to 12 year old kids. It began in 1987 and is still going strong in 2009 with over 640 episodes.

As parents with kids in the target range, my wife and I would listen to the episodes on the local Christian radio station every Saturday morning along with the kids . When we realized the episodes were available on cassette (and then CD) albums, we started buying or borrowing them from libraries for family road trips. That was in the 90s. Now that our kids are 24, 20 and 19--we still listen! The characters, the humor, the drama, the sound effects are all first-rate.

This book takes Odyssey fans behind the microphone to find out how Odyssey got started, how it matured, and documents all the episodes through Album #50. There are many interviews and pictures of the voice actors and sound designers (who are as important as the actors in a quality radio drama like this one).

But the main part of the book are the synopses of each episode, grouped by the cassette/CD album, listing the original air date, writer, sound designer, scripture, theme, and plot summary. Trivia about the episodes includes goofs, behind the scene tidbits, deleted scenes, "sound bites" from the sound designers, and sidebars that explain details like "How Does the Imagination Station Work?" and "Odyssey's Twisted Geography."

The obvious value of this format as a reference book is enhanced even more by title, Scripture, theme, and Bible story indexes. The book could be used by teachers or group leaders organizing Bible studies or other group events.

But fans like myself will find the memories and insights into past Odyssey episode favorites worth reading straight through from beginning to end just like I did. By the way, "Have You Ever Been to Odyssey?" is a song written and sung by Odyssey's favorite geek Eugene Meltsner (who accompanies himself on his trusty ukulele!). You can find the words to the song here, of course, and plenty more that will make you pull out those old episodes and listen to them all over again.
