In the opening pages of this well-crafted story, you will meet Ruby Hjort, an orphan who arrives at the home of Santa Kloss. Ruby has heard that Mr. Kloss takes in orphans and teaches them carpentry. These apprentices make toys which Mr. Kloss gives to orphans on Christ's Day--yet all of these apprentices are boys. Ruby would be the first girl in the shop. With persistence Ruby begins working with Mrs. Kloss and eventually works her way to learn the skill of carpentry and making toys.

Dan T. Davis has written a seven chapter story which is rich with layers, twists and turns. Ruby learned that the work of making toys is more than it seems. As Papa Kloss says, "We give children love at least one day a year. We give gifts on Christ's day, because I believe that is what God wants me to do. I just wish I could help some child every day, to make sure they receive all the love and care they need." (page 44).

Whether you read this book only at Christmas or in the dead of winter or pull it out during the heat of summer to rekindle your affection for winter and snow, I highly recommend AN ORPHAN'S PROMISE. I believe the reading of this story will become an annual traditional for many families.
