Pros: some helpful tips

Cons: expects too much or too little from kids

The Bottom Line: not too long so won't waste too much of yuor time if you're curious

This book builds on his method of parenting from his first Babywise book. This one covers the discipline portion. Though I hesitate to say discipline since it is geared to children starting at 5 months. Just like my review of Babywise, in Babywise II there are some things you can take from it but others you should leave.

In Babywise II he covers discipline, manners, mealtime, independence, etc. I really do not agree with striking a 5 month old, even if just on the hand. But that is my opinion. I also really don’t think a child needs to learn to be confined to a playpen alone. Restricting their access can help keep them from getting overwhelmed but a child has to learn to be able to handle all types of situations and such strict restriction doesn’t allow them to do this. Some of his explanations of reasoning behind his opinions really do not expect enough of children, they are much smarter than he shows, yet in another section he expects that. It really makes the book inconsistent.

I really liked his advice on helping your child to sign or watching for signs they already use to help catch them before there is a problem, such as at mealtime. I also liked his advice on keeping the marriage happy. Though he does seem to push very heavily that this should be #1 and I think we, being adults, should be the ones to compromise and make the kids #1 for the short time they are small. But creatively you can combine both.

All in all it is a short, quick read so you won’t waste too much time checking it out. That said the first Babywise was better and it wasn’t even that great.
