David Loogan is a mysterious sort hiding a past. He recently moved to Ann Arbor and works on a novel in his spare time. As each revision is finished he takes a printed copy to a publishing house (Grey Streets) and leaves it anonymously through a transom window over a door. One day he is found out by the Grey Street's publisher (Tom), who offers him a job as an editor. Such is the fun way that things occur in this murder mystery.     David is enticed into an affair by Tom's wife, …

David Loogan is a very mysterious man with a past and, although plenty of people are asking, he's not talking! A recent arrival in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Loogan is surprised when Tom Kristoll, the publisher of Gray Streets, a mystery magazine, offers him a job as an editor. He's even more surprised when Kristoll asks for his help burying a body. Perhaps, understanding that Loogan would prefer that his past also stay buried, Kristoll intuitively understands that Loogan won't be doing any …

Every once in a while there is a story that is written in such a unique manner it is hard to explain and impossible to deny. BAD THINGS HAPPEN is such a story. The writing style is not unusual, but has an aura of "classical-ness" to it that makes the story an almost instant classic. Whatever it is that I am trying to describe reminds me of the writing style of JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL. That being said, BAD THINGS HAPPEN is not without faults.      BAD THINGS …

David Loogan is a stranger in town, and on a whim, he drops off a manuscript at the office of a popular short story magazine, Gray Streets. The magazine's publisher, Tom Kristoll likes the story, and offers Loogan a job as editor, which he accepts. Soon strange things begin to happen, bad things, but Loogan likes Kristoll and decides to trust him.     Bad Things Happen is a slowly unfolding novel, and the reader comes to know more about the magazine's contributors than about …

Usually I go for character-driven stories, but I found the intense focus on plot in 'Bad Things Happen' to be very engaging.    David Loogan appears as a rootless protagonist who's caught up in a scandalous series of murders that point in different directions as to who-done-it and why.    Do they all connect or are some of them completely random?    Seeking the answer to this question kept me reading right through the novel.    As …

Bad Things Happen offers both good news and bad news for its author, Harry Dolan. The good news is that Dolan's debut novel is both excellent and a joy to read; the bad news is that he just set the bar so high for himself that it will be difficult to jump that high again his next time out (not a bad tradeoff of good and bad, as I feel certain Mr. Dolan would agree).    As the novel opens, David Loogan is in search of a special shovel, one that will work well in tight quarters. …

This mystery made me work a little, but I enjoyed it. Kudos go to the author for making the story so involving. I started out not liking the lead character, but I was rooting for him in the end. This is a thoroughly enjoyable, sophisticated murder mystery.    The irony is amusing - murder mystery writers are being murdered. It had the potential to be cheesy, but it was pulled off quite well. There's an interesting plot twist that is unbelievably cool. This mystery is a bit of …
