Required for an Asian History course I took. The thorough exhibition of personality by each of the main characters made the history and culture much more memorable to me that semester.

This charming little page-turner is a fast read. It takes place during China's Cultural Revolution where two young intellectual city boys are exiled to the remote mountains for 're-education.' There they meet the beautiful daughter of a tailor and secretly educate her from a stash of banned books. The descriptions are so lush, I was transported to the mountains where I could smell the mud during Maos revolution. Dai Sijie's storytelling artfully captured the pace of mountain living …
