A photo history of the lengthy history of baseball in Toledo, Ohio

  • Jun 28, 2010
There has been a professional baseball team in Toledo, Ohio almost since the beginning of professional baseball. The first season was 1883 and although there is a long and colorful history of a team in Toledo, the action has not been consistent. There have been stretches of years when Toledo did not have a professional baseball team.
This book is almost totally a collection of photos of the teams and some of the most famous players and managers. Well-known players/managers such as Casey Stengel, Mike Marshall, Hack Wilson and Dazzy Vance have roots in Toledo baseball. Less well known but far more interesting is the fact that the first black player in the major leagues was Moses Fleetwood (Fleet) Walker, a catcher for the 1884 Toledo team. The second black player was his brother Welday, who joined the team later in the season. The fact that blacks were first allowed to play major league baseball and then banned is something that is almost never mentioned in the histories of baseball.
This specialized history of baseball does not have broad appeal. Nevertheless, it demonstrates the rich history of baseball in a city not otherwise known as a baseball town. Similar stories could be written about many other cities. For example, professional baseball in Cedar Rapids, Iowa began in 1891 with a team called the Canaries. I hope that other cities have their baseball histories recorded in a similar manner.
