Suddenly the Old Testament doesn't seem so blood-thirsty

  • Jun 10, 2011

My husband likes modern military history. He's very well-read about it, and I'm not. But Chaim Herzog's Battles of the Bible caught my eye in the store--a military history of ancient Israel? How could anyone know? And now it's on my frequently-referred-to list of books, a fascinating exploration of Biblical history, built on stories of Bible kings and military leaders, contemporary accounts and methods of war, the terrain, the traditions, and the methods of war employed since Biblical times. The result is a book that makes sense of why Israel wanted a king, that explains how the sun might have seemed to stand still, that leaves the reader admiring military leaders' plans and realizing those long "boring" passages actually have something useful to say. History (even in the Bible) might be written by the victor, but this book turns those Bible battles back into history and makes them all make sense.
