Unique Dinosaur Book About the Evolution of Ideas About Dinosaurs

  • Mar 12, 2008
Pros: Unique approach to teaching about dinosaurs

Cons: None

The Bottom Line: Great book for kids interested in knowing the real truth about dinosaurs...at least the truth currently known.

This is an interesting non-fiction dinosaur picture book for kids around ages 3 to 7. The text is pretty simply written and written in an interesting way that makes this a picture book young kids can enjoy having read to them. It is also a good book for kids who can already read on their own and want to learn about dinosaurs.

This book is not a normal book listing types of dinosaurs and a little about dinosaurs, which is what many kid’s picture dinosaur books do. Instead this book provides a very different look at dinosaurs. It tells about what scientists once hypothesized dinosaurs were like starting with Chinese who thought the bones belonged to dragon creatures. It then tells how further dinosaur fossil discoveries and study has proved some of the hypotheses wrong. The book tackles topic such as how scientists once thought Iguanodons had horn, but later discovered they had an incomplete skeleton and the horn was actually part of the hand. Some of the things it talks about being wrong are things that remain common misconceptions about dinosaurs, such as that they are reptiles, but they are not.

The best part of this book is not that it demonstrates how even scientific facts sometimes change, but rather that it does not try to be the real truth on dinosaurs. In the end it actually says that perhaps in your lifetime ideas on what dinosaurs were like will change with new discoveries and perhaps even you will be the one to show that we are still wrong about dinosaurs. Overall this is what really makes the book great from beginning to end in that it challenges kids to think outside the box and shows that there are still discoveries left to make.
