Cicero was Rome's most feared politician and lawyer. The work presents the geography of the day with a map of the Tyrrhenian Sea,  Ionian and Adriatic Seas which surrounded Italy and Sicily. The city of Rome was complex with a population of over 1MM people.  There were shopping malls, bars, theatre and sports events.  In 167 BC, citizens of Rome no longer paid taxes. The government  had a weak constitution. Accordingly, the Consul veto power frustrated governance. …

This is a great, relaxing read on a fascinating man. Unlike other books about Roman politicians, this book really focuses on Cicero and makes him come alive. Particularly useful are the quotations of Cicero's copious letters to Atticus. These quotes really let the reader see Cicero the man in his own words.    The author does tend to take a positive view of his subject (perhaps more than is warranted), but the reader can still make his or her own judgments.

This is an excellent biography of Marcus Tullius Cicero, orator, politician, statesman, and staunch guardian of the Roman Republic in the time of Julius Caesar. The author has used Cicero's own letters, plus the many ancient sources still remaining, to tell a gripping tale of his subject's life, and the interesting and perilous times in which he lived.
