I had high hopes for "Cold Blood". I will admit that I did not read White Blood: A Novel so that may have hindered my enjoyment of Cold Blood, but I have my doubts. At its best "Cold Blood" reminded me of the Jules Verne's Michael Strogoff; or, The Courier of the Czar (Dodo Press) , the theme is similar (although they describe different revolutions. Unfortunately "Cold Blood" has neither Verne's sense of adventure nor his ability to craft a page-turner.   …

Although it is not necessary to appreciate and enjoy this book, some knowledge of the history of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia is helpful. Charlie Doig is a man on a mission while the society around him is crumbling into armed chaos. A highly ranked Bolshevik official named Prokhor Glebov led the gang rape and torture of Doig's beloved wife Elizaveta. Often it does an author no favor to be related to another,famous, author. In this case, the author is the nephew of Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond novels. To my taste, Ian Fleming was not a particularly good writer (neither is Dan Brown), but his story line carried the books, and the publicity from the films made the Bond written franchise best sellers among a certain class of people.    This author has the same failings as his uncle, but without any of the redeeming …
