Pros: Beautiful and haunting Civil War Story

Cons: None

In short, Cold Mountain blew me away. Every now and then a book or movie comes up out of nowhere and floors me. This was the case with Cold Mountain. A wounded Confederate deserts and tries to find his way home is the jist of the book but the characters and stories along the way are priceless.

The author has the gift of language and the characters words flow off the pages very naturally. The book is stunning in it's simplicity and depth.
People are reduced to their bare emotions and reactions trying to survive in very austere circumstances.

It is basically a love story and what one man will do to get back home to a girl he hopes is still there. His journey is long and very hard and he almost starves many times.

A wonderful historical novel by a first time author. A stunning first novel which I can't stop thinking about.
