Real Color, Realistic, From James Gurney

As  a painter, I constantly search for new ways, new ideas, new color wheels, generally, new ways to look at the amazing possibilities of color.

I have a curious mind and really work hard to understand the amazing ways to mix, present, overlay, glaze, blend and make colors pop on my paintings. Maybe I should say make certain colors pop, because when they all pop, the painting begins to look like a bunch of balloons.

So how does James Gurney appeal to me? James does not dump information as if you know as much as he does. James gives you bite-sized discussions that show you how color needs to be in harmony with light sources, shadows, half shadows, reflections and the so important edge lighting and back lighting.

James is readable, doesn't bog down with information dumps. He takes you through his thoughts and ideas in a sensible way that allows your artistic individuality to shine.  For example, he shares much discussion about choosing the lighting when you have that choice, and encourages you to make sure you take advantage of the choices you have. Then, he tells you the advantages and disadvantage of these choices.

Want to see a new color wheel? James Gurney offers you one!

I want to get back to painting someday, maybe when the kids are older and can paint along side me without much supervision. I'll have to add this to my 'check out at the library' list. :)
