My grandmother was a Japanese WWII war bride. She was whisked away to a very small Louisiana town. My Grandparents were eventually the proud parents of 5 children, my Dad included, who were raised without learning anything about the culture that made up half of who they are. Unlike several of the other reviews that compare this book to other travel guides in the book series, this is my first The Lonely Planet Discovery book. My daughter plans on studying in Japan for the Rotary foreign exchange student program and we are positive this book will prepare for her travels to come.    Japan, which is know as the "Land of the Rising Sun" can be hectic as well as tranquil depending where you want to go. This travel guide is attractive and enjoyable to read. It contains many maps and photos and uses color very well.    I have never been to Japan so I can't vouch for the accuracy of the information. I don't expect a guide to be perfect since every visit to a foreign country can be a different experience and each individual has a different outlook. However this guide can be a little contradictory. On page 42 in the "At A Glance" section it mentions VISA and MasterCard are widely …

I've been a fan of the Lonely Planet guidebooks for years. I used a number of them living and traveling around Asia. In fact, I used my earlier edition on Japan extensively when I lived there in the 90s. Seeing they had new full color versions out, I wanted to check out "Discover Japan." The book is written by multiple authors and is as informative as it is attractive. The full color pictures, maps, and lay out make a great guidebook even better.
