The Dalek Factor

  • Mar 18, 2009
At just over a hundred pages, you might think that Gareth Roberts' "I Am A Dalek" is too short to be that enjoyable. On the contrary, it's a swift moving and fun read that can easily be digested within an hour. In this tale, the Tenth Doctor and Rose have plans to do a little bit of golfing on the moon. Instead, the TARDIS hurls them to the south coast of England.

At first, it seems like the TARDIS has malfunctioned, but when the Doctor and Rose are split up, they uncover a dark, ancient Roman secret that brings a legendary enemy back to life.

With just a few pages to get the story across, Roberts wastes little time in developing characters. Fans of the series will have no problems with this, as the Doctor, Rose and the Daleks have all been fleshed out on television. The only characters who get a bit of development are Frank Openshaw and Kate Yates, who play pivotal roles in the tale.

For fans of fast-paced tales, this book is the perfect choice. Fans of Doctor Who will most likely enjoy this story as well, although it might not have enough of a plot to give them their Who fix. I personally enjoyed this story and plan to check out more of the "Quick Reads" series. Recommended.
