Spenser is a Big Brother, Susan is a juvenile girl

  • Dec 28, 2010
In this story, Spenser is hired to recover a teenage boy that is a ping-pong ball between his divorced parents. While his mother Patty Giacomin has custody of Paul, his father Mel is taking it as a personal issue and has snatched him. Spenser has little difficulty in finding and returning the boy but he realizes that Paul has been seriously neglected. He is gaunt, unkempt and does little more than listlessly watch TV. To the consternation of Susan Silverman, Spenser becomes a surrogate father to Paul, teaching him how to do the basics of life, teaching him to be autonomous.
Mel Giacomin is a shady individual and he sends some lesser thugs after Paul and Spenser intervenes. The situation escalates as Spenser pushes people around that are higher and higher on the bad guy scale. Susan has a few bouts of jealousy over Spenser's attention and aiding of Paul, she is a little too prissy and self-centered, for it is within the bounds of the Spenser character. She finally comes around to the point where she aids Spenser in his treatment of Paul and after the obligatory climactic battle, a solution to the custody battle is found.
The fundamentals of the Spenser character are that he is a thug with a deep heart, intellect and a strong sense of the philosophy of right and wrong. He demonstrates that with his sympathy for Paul as he fills the role of Big Brother. Hawk is as Hawk should be, an enigma that should remain that, but Susan is out of bounds here. After all, Paul is no real threat to her relationship with Spenser and if she had a bit more sense, she could have used him as a lever to learn more about Spenser's childhood. For there is a distinct hint that the aid Spenser is giving Paul may be some kind of payback for aid that Spenser received as a child.
