The first time I picked up Empire Falls, I couldn't really get into it. However, the second time, once I made it past the first few chapters, I could not put it down! Russo does a great job of developing the characters and making them easy to relate to. At a certain point, you become so connected with the characters, you begin to feel as if you actually know them. I picked this up while just browing the book shelves of Barnes and Noble without any recommendation and I was glad to have found it. It turned out to be one of the best novels I've read in recent months. This is another book about small home town, but the story has elements of mystery, wit and great imagery.
