Feng Shaun: A Cute, but Useless, Book

Pros: cute visuals, a few useful tidbits

Cons: mainly useless

The Bottom Line: Baaaaaaaaah humbug.

My family doesn't exchange Christmas presents anymore, and Feng Shaun: Discover Inner Peace with Shaun the Sheep epitomizes why. It's the kind of gift that is cute when you first open it, but you'll probably never read it again, and it will just gather dust on your shelves. Or you could re-gift it. Honestly, most Americans have so much useless junk in their homes that they could give away used gifts to their friends and family on Christmas and everyone would have more money and less stress.

Feng Shaun is a small, square book that has screen shots from Nick Park's Wallace & Gromit claymations to go along with simple pieces of advice to make one's life less stressful. Despite his wide-eyed look, Shaun the Sheep is always calm in any situation, unlike his neurotic companion, Wallace.

Shaun encourages us to "clear away clutter," spend more time with good people rather than bad ones, pay attention to personal grooming, practice Tai Chi, try not to over-react, get enough exercise, eat green vegetables, take deep breaths, etc. This isn't ground-breaking stuff. There are 22 pages of advice and illustrations.

Most of the illustrations directly relate to the pieces of advice, but some of them are ironic. For instance, there's a picture of Shaun wearing a ridiculous outfit on the page about looking your best every day.

As the book features pictures from the Wallace and Gromit movies, it probably wouldn't make much sense to people who are unfamiliar with those cartoons. For Wallace and Gromit fans, the pictures may bring back fond memories.

I love sheep, and I'm an admirer of Nick Park's claymation, but this silly book has not enhanced my life at all. This book can't be taken seriously as a self-help title, of course, as all of the advice is far too simplistic.

Change your response to stress: Dealing with anxiety in a calm, dignified manner nourishes your inner self.

Easier said than done!

At U.S. $9.95, you're better off saving your money.
