Not an Easy Read, Beautiful, Horrifying, Sad, Hopeful But Not Easy

What an awful yet beautiful story. I am saddened to think that so many people struggled so during the aftermath of the Chicago fire. Illness, tragedy, horrific events and evil people are unleashed on the Spafford family and their friends. I found myself dreading the disaster that I knew was coming. The last hundred pages of the book became almost excruciating as I struggled with the knowledge of what was coming. Christine Schuab writes a story that feels real and grabs and pulls at the reader's heart and soul.

Escapist readers may want to consider the emotional investment they'll be required to take. The history is rich and I was surprised at the relationship between the Spafford and D.L. Moody and was blessed by a glimpse into the great pastor's life. Well-written and page-turning at times, slow and plodding at others read that ends with hope. God's grace and love are clearly represented and though it is a tough, tough read, it ends up shining as faith and hope save the day.
