Please rate my review for its content, not whether or not you agree with my opinions, as judging its helpfulness. Taken in their entirety, my comments address Hitchens' argumentative strengths & strategic weaknesses, thus three stars. I'm trying to respond fairly to what's inevitably meant as a contentious book-- given his barbed (sub)title.    To sum up his thesis: ultimately, the Golden Rule needs no God. We can live up to its message without cringing for fear of annihilation …

Christopher Hitchens notes in his acknowledgments that he has been working on this book all of his life, and it shows. He has gathered concise and damning evidence about all of the major world religions and their impact on human life. I find it difficult to believe that any "believer" can present convincing counter arguments to his thesis that "religion poisons everything." If you want to own just one reference book to bolster your atheism and help lead others out of the darkness of ancient myth …

This is the second major book of atheist philosophy to hit the market in recent months (the other, of course, being The God Delusion). Like Dawkins' book, it asserts the notion that there is no god of any sort. It makes the points with intelligent, well-reasoned statements and seldom lapses into polemic and stridency.    However, the book is not as easy of a read. It is surprisingly slow going.
