Walk into any public library today and you are sure to find a number of books concerning the recent scandals in the Catholic Church.  However, I can say with a great deal of confidence that you will rarely, if ever, find "Goodbye, Good Men" available on the shelf.   There is another side to the story. Michael S. Rose has written a thoughtful, disturbing and well documented book about the problems in today's Church and what he perceives to be the root cause.  Rose argues that for an extended period of time following the Second Vatican Council orthodox Catholic men seeking to enter the priesthood were routinely eliminated because of their "rigid" views.  In the meantime, a good many of the seminaries around the nation became homosexual havens where traditional Church teachings were scoffed at by both faculty and students alike.  Rose also makes a powerful argument that vocations to the priesthood began to decline sharply in the 1970's when the idea of "self sacrifice" was tossed aside in favor of personal "self fulfillment".   It seems that the Church itself had succumbed to the values that had become so prevalent in the secular world at large.
As an active Catholic I am pleased to report that after much soul searching over the past few years the Church has seemed to turn the corner on some of these difficult and sensitive issues.  However, there is still much work to be done.  "Goodbye Good Men: How Liberals Brought Corruption Into The Catholic Church" is disturbing to say the least.   The book is largely based on numerous interviews and is meticulously footnoted.  This a "must read" for anyone seeking to understand just what happened and is interested in joining the debate on the future direction of the Church.  Recommended!

Is there anything liberals can't be blamed for? Perhaps they can also pin the Spanish Inquisition on us if they try hard enough. Its amazing how a rational can be found when you need one. The church found several nice ones (including homosexuality and satanism) when they wanted to eliminate the Knights Templar. Well, at least they finally forgave Galileo.
