Nice outline of biomedical autism healing & challenge to the denial of mainstream medicine

Dr. Buckley's book on autism is a relatively quick read, designed for parents and filled with a variety of stories and metaphors to help people grasp ideas and points being made in the book. Buckley is an M.D. from Ponte Vedra Beach near Jacksonville FL, whose child developed autism. This led her to research and find solutions which put her in conflict with mainstream medicine. The orthodox view is that autism is primarily genetic and that symptom-suppressing drugs and behavioral therapies are the mainstay of treatment, with no likelihood of recovery or reversal of autism.

The alternative views tend to identify environmental toxicity, especially vaccines, as triggers for biological disruptions that lead to autistic spectrum disorders. Since mainstream medicine itself is a leading culprit in the cause of autism (with toxic vaccines), few doctors will admit the truth about this no matter how much evidence accumulates demonstrating the connection.

Buckley's book looks at the stressors and toxins that contribute to autism and the biomedical approaches that use nutrition, allergy recognition, detoxification, chelation, digestive support, and other measures to help the body's sytems begin functioning normally. In many cases these approaches reverse autism - especially when started at an early age. There is a lot of great information and lists of resources in this book for those who desire to help children recover from autism - it must be recognized that treatment is individualized and works best when parents, physicians, and teachers work cooperatively on helping reduce stress and assisting in safe detoxification.

Those who want to believe the medical orthodoxy and let the ignorance and arrogance of most doctors keep their children from having a chance at recovering their health and neurological equilibrium may wish to avoid this book. This book highlights a very dark era in modern medicine - one where those who promote truth and healing are suppressed and persecuted.

My only disagrements with Dr. Buckley involve her stating that autism is purely a condition caused by physiological factors. She acknowledges there is a genetic role and that stress interferes with clearing toxicity. Taking that further, it's possible to see how psychological/psychospiritual and energetic factors shape who gets autism in reaction to environmental toxin exposures. Genes carry memory of our reaction to stressors - so we pass along dysfunctional psychosocial and psychological patterns that lead our descendants to have certain weaknesses. On that level there is a psychological causal factor contributing to autism - though I agree that the autistic condition would almost never manifest absent the toxic exposures that upset the digestive, immune, and nervous systems. As a holistic therapist in Miami I've seen both how biomedical healing resources have fostered recovery and improvements as well as how energetic and psycho-spiritual interventions have supported recovery. Thus, I believe in this combined holistic approach that is outlined to some extent in Stephanie Marohn's Natural Medicine Guide to Autism.
