Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger Audrey Niffenegger follows up the success of The Time Traveller's Wife with another excursion into the paranormal, with a compelling tale about a identical twins, Valentina and Julia, and their inheritance of their Aunt Elspeth's London estate on the borders of Highgate Cemetery. Elspeth is also a twin, estranged sister to the girls' own mother. In the two flats above and below the girls live two men, Martin, who suffers from severe OCD, and …

Her Fearful Symmetry: a book review with spoilers
Her Fearful Symmetry: A Novel   by Audrey Niffenegger   416 pages   Scribner      WARNING:  This reveiew contains a major plot spoiler.       I read this book recently and found it intriguing and clever but the ending disappointed me.  That's the short version.  The longer version is that Niffenegger is a very evocative writer with a trick or two up her sleeve. Her characters were interesting enough that after I …

I loved Audrey Niffenegger's The Time-Traveller's Wife so I was really looking forward to reading Her Fearful Symmetry when it came out in paperback. I wasn't disappointed, though I suspect my husband may not like this one as much. Part of his joy in Time-Traveller was the single premise, carried through to its logical conclusions. Symmetry, in contrast, starts from a single event which has somehow driven twins Elspeth and Edie apart sometime in the past. Now twin daughters Julia and …

I have been greatly impressed with Audrey Niffenegger's first acclaimed novel The Time Traveler's Wife that I was eager to read her other works. Unfortunately, Her Fearful Symmetry: A Novel does not come even close to her other work. Conceived as a modern gothic ghost story, the novel comes across as more motivated by places and certain quirky ideas than by the struggles and aspirations of its protagonists. The plotline and the protagonists come across as highly contrived and poorly motivated. Many …

Not comparing this to The Time Traveler's Wife was hard for me. I've read it several times (book clubs, etc) and is one of my favorite books. But I knew going in that this was a very different subject and different book. It was hard for me not to compare it, but I'll do the best I can with it...    The good is that the descriptions the author uses in this book is amazing. The cemetery, the town, the people... I felt like I was right there, I can see the trees, the twins, the …

After The Time Traveler's Wife (TTTW), this book has been much anticipated by so many, including myself.     That puts a lot of pressure on the author as well as the reader. I had to begin the book with an open mind to read it as a stand alone and not a 'follow-up' to The Times Traveler's Wife.    The story begins with the untimely death of Elspeth who leaves behind her lover, Robert. Robert has an apartment (flat) in the same building as Elspeth and is devastated …

When Elspeth Noblin dies of cancer, she leaves her London apartment to her twin nieces, Julia and Valentina. These two American girls never met their English aunt; they only knew that their mother, too, was a twin, and Elspeth her sister. Julia and Valentina are semi-normal American teenagers -- with seemingly little interest in college, finding jobs, or anything outside their cozy home in the suburbs of Chicago, and with an abnormally intense attachment to one another.    The …

I was very excited to receive this ARC. I did enjoy The Time Traveler’s Wife but possibly not as much as if I had read it before the hype machine throttled forward at warp speed.  So, even though there is much anticipation about Audrey Niffenegger’s newest novel, having the opportunity to read it without reviews and movie trailers bombarding my brain was thrilling.  Let me just say I am so opposite of disappointed.  Thrilled, mesmerized and enthralled are just some ways …

Twins, family secrets, psychoses, ghosts, and love that transcends death. 'Her Fearful Symmetry' - Audrey Niffenegger's follow-up novel to the astonishing 'Time Traveler's Wife' - weaves a complex web of story, one which mostly holds together but occasionally stumbles under its own weight.    It's important to note that this is a very different book than 'The Time Traveler's Wife,' which is a good thing in my opinion. Niffenegger found something really special with her first …
