A nicely different Amish tale

Marta Perry drives readers straight into a ditch with the opening of Hide in Plain Sight, and yes, the ditch is in Amish country, though the protagonist is clearly traveling from somewhere else. In fact, Andrea Hampton is rushing to her sister’s hospital bedside, and there’s something about cars and buggies and accidents that tugs at the heartstrings long before it’s made clear. There’s something about the rugged stranger who comes to Andrea's aid as well, though neither of them seems overly impressed with the other.

The scene moves to a welcoming guest house amongst peaceful Amish farms. This reader’s hooked; there’s a dog! And there’s history, of course, and problems, to drive what becomes a pleasantly believable tale of memory and fear, guilt and forgiveness, and the tender mercies of love. Descriptions come naturally through the characters’ eyes and paint themselves in the readers’, creating delightful scenes and fascinating people.

Friends and neighbors speculate about who the mysterious Cal Burke might be, while family speculate on the future of Grams’ business venture, and a strange intruder seems to mount a campaign of almost accidents. Meanwhile Andrea juggles work duties with family, trying to learn which really comes first. It’s a lesson well-learned with an answer that, like true friendship, was always hiding in plain sight.
