Interesting perspective on the drug trade

"High" recounts the tale of Brian O'Dea, a major drug smuggler. It's written in a terse, choppy style that works well in communicating his experiences not only as a drug smuggler, but also as an inmate. Fast-paced and not without humor despite the serious nature of the topic.

I very much appreciated O'Dea's taking responsibility for his actions - he doesn't sugar-coat his mistakes or blame others. It can be a bit confusing at times since the book does not keep in chronological order. While it was a bit off-putting early-on, it works well once you're into the story line. It can make it difficult, however, to keep track of the long list of characters.

I found the day-to-day experiences of his time behind bars to be engrossing and illuminating. While not preachy, it conveys a clear message of the perils and (usual) outcome of the drug life, but also how redemption is possible.
