Laurie Colwin's book, Home Cooking, is a cookbook, hiding in a beautifully written memoir. It is an intimate portrait of a woman who unfortunately died of a heart attack at the very young age of 48. This book explores her experiences as a young woman, and her early attempts at entertaining and cooking. The book is filled with humor, insight, and fantastic recipes woven throughout the book--all contributing to a wonderful glimpse at Colwin's early developmental years as a cook. She later worked as a columnist for Gourmet magazine, and in Home Cooking, the reader can see where and how she learned her craft.
After her death, another title, More Home Cooking, was published, and she wrote many other books--all novels. She was a brilliant talent who left us too soon. Her recipes live on, as I have incorporated many of the recipes in Home Cooking into my own repertoire, as have my mother and my sister. It is wonderful to prepare one of her dishes, and to know the history of its origin. Even for those who aren’t interested in cooking, this is an wonderful memoir, and it has recently been reissued. The hope is that a new generation of readers will discover Laurie Colwin.
