Sam Beaudry, mixed blood sheriff of Bear Root County is dependable and an all around good guy. Keeping the people of the small Rock Mountain community safe was a job he took seriously. But things haven’t always been that way, and when a young girl arrives claiming to be his mother Hilda’s granddaughter, Sam’s lifestyle takes a sudden change.

Two years ago, nurse Maggie Whiteside moved to Montana with her son Jim. The boy idolizes Sam and the sheriff and Maggie are attracted to one another. Star’s arrival unsettles the budding relationship Sam has with Maggie, but he’s a protective man, and even though he doesn’t think he is Star’s father, he will do anything for the young girl who has traveled all the way from California to see her grandmother.

Star’s mother, with whom Sam has a history, is dying, and she does die before she and Sam can talk. Soon, another part of Sam’s history comes to town..someone who spells danger for Sam, Star and Maggie.

Kathleen Eagle has penned many stories of the West, some of them with Native American heroes. Strong plots, compelling characters and great dialogue are a hallmark for this fine author. You’ll love the mix of playfulness and warmth in this story.
