Johnson does a great job crafting subtle [and some overt] symbolism in this book. Movie rendition not too shabby -- Jack Black's in it.

A professor assigned this book and one other for our semester-long creative writing class (the other was "The Things They Carried", by Tim O'Brien, which is also a great book not only for learning how to write short stories, but for its soldier's view of the Vietnam War).  We read them out of order, so the first one I read was "Dirty Wedding", about a man whose pregnant girlfriend went to get an abortion, and he is dealing with the realities of it.  In a scene in which he goes in to see …
