"Reaching people isn't magic. It's an art...and a science. And it's easier than you think."--Mark Goulston, from Just Listen

Had a fight? Angry? Confused? Tongue-tied and unable to decide upon a course of action?

Odds are, if you are ineffective in a relationship with your boss, child, spouse, or partner, you're also exasperated because you just can't and don't understand how to get through to them. Mark Goulston, an expert in reaching everyone--including hostage takers, suicide contemplators, and Fortune 500 CEOs, teaches us how to step outside the binds of frustration and reach those we wish to have understand us.

But first, we must comprehend them, and it begins with listening.

Goulston, who describes himself as "just an average guy," gifts his readers with the powerful techniques which have helped him in about any impossible situation. Goulston knows the fine art of persuasion and explains the steps, beginning with overcoming the resisting and culminating with making the other guy feel glad they helped, and feels encouraged to continue doing so.

The secret Goulston adds is to get people to "buy in," which all begins with you listening and the other person speaking. Just Listen outlines nine rules and 12 valuable techniques which are easily utilized in both work and personal life. Goulston has taught these same concepts to FBI agents and CEOS, enabling them to keep their cool in unstable situations and against bullies and jerks. He incorporates his well known "Usable Insight," which has provided help for thousands for years. Illustrating his points with client-related tales of positive change, he shows the reader how he puts his own neck out on the line, baring his own weaknesses. Goulston provides an inspirational message to those willing to affect their own circumstances.

Humble though he may be, Mark Goulston is far from being an average guy, and Just Listen is not the average book. Just Listen is a book for the average person, who could use a little Usable Insight from someone who knows how to take the hand of the desperate, and walk them back from the brink of disaster or death.

Dr. Mark Goulston is the best selling author or four books. He is a business psychiatrist and works with executives, senior managers and sales teams to achieve breakthrough results by becoming better listeners.

He is a member of the International Leadership Association and has been a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors and the Worldwide Association of Business Coaches. It always seem so simple but, at times, it's the hardest thing to do- to really listen to what the other person is saying to you. Thanks for sharing this book, great review :)
