The Individual Moments Work; but the Big Picture Falls Flat

Justice League: Cry for Justice issue 2 continues in the same fashion of issue 1 with several stories getting some face time with little resolution or direction to the overall storyline. For the most part, the individual stories work in their own right, but from a macroscopic vantage point the story is as vague ever.

It has been years since I read Final Crisis so it could just be that I have forgotten some obvious connection between the death of Batman and what is expected to happen next; but the Cry for Justice storyline has essentially been the individual rallying of random "lesser" heroes in the DC Universe. I actually have no problem with the less famous heroes getting serious page time and this feature of the series is one of the biggest highlights, but it feels to me like in one of the upcoming issues there is going to be some serious dues ex machina where all the B-List heroes end up on the same rooftop in Gotham saying "Woah, fancy running into you dudes here; Justice? YEAH JUSTICE" (actually this does happen to a lesser degree at the conclusion of issue 2).

This issue features a random and seemingly unnecessary battle between Congo Bill and Starman (probably just to add some action into the mix); a decent dialogue between Green Arrow, Hal Jordan, and Jason Bard on the Gotham rooftops; the Flash Museum; and Captain Marvel.

Sadly, the climax of this issue isn't even written or illustrated and only the aftermath of the villians sprawled on the floor with no indication or explanation for how they all were bested.

As I mentioned, individually the scenes drawn work well under a microscope; but when the reader pulls back to the larger story and anticipated outcome the pieces just don't fit well together. The direction is lacking (or non existent) and no indication of where the story is headed (especially in light of the ending of issue 2). The series (so far) also plays onto some of the comic tropes which adds another level of humor to the series. For example, my favorite line in this issues is Hal Jordan says to Jason Bard: "I know this is Gotham, where it's law apparently that people conduct every important conversation on a rooftop, but is there a reason we couldn't have met in your office?"

Cascioli's illustrations are solid and outshine the writing. He was nominated (along with Robinson) for a 2010 Eisner Award but did not win. Something magical is going to have to happen in the next five issues for me to believe Robinson deserved that nomination.

Following issue 1's footsteps, Robinson has a detailed commentary at the conclusion of this issue, which mostly focuses on The Atom. The two page Origin story also focuses on Ray Palmer and his transformation to The Atom.

I love the cover art here. Too bad the writing does not come up to standard.

The cover art is spectacular; I had not even noticed there was a color variation out there. The black and white version conveys a somber yet important mood. I think the cover is also deceptive because of the battle conveyed between Congo Bill and Starman. Looking at the cover again makes me realize that the battle between these two allies really was just a ploy to get some action into the story; which is even more disappointing since the battle between Green Arrow and Hal Jordan against Prometheus and his goons is just an afterthought. The most recognizable villains (to me) in the rubble are Scarecrow, an insect character, and a boar (names I cannot place or remember). It would have been good to see that battle instead of the one that was pictured.
