A book by Justine Larbalestier

Starred Review. Grade 9 Up—Biracial Micah Wilkins, 17, is the quintessential unreliable narrator. On the first page, she readily admits she's a liar though now she wants to tell her story straight. She attends a progressive private high school … see full wiki

Spoilers. Liar was unlike any book I've ever read. I had heard about the book cover controversy and was intrigued, and for the first part of the book, I was totally with __, until we got to the twist in the plot, which I won't spoil, except to say it took it out of the realm of being relatable for me as a reader. I can safely say that if I'd known this was a theme of the book, I wouldn't have bought it, because I tend not to read books with those themes (nothing against them, it's just not my thing), …

What can I even say? Well, not much, because I respect Justine's wishes to keep the twists and turns under wraps.     Micah is definitely an interesting protagonist (or is she an antagonist?). With every page, you think you've got her all figured out, until you turn the page again, and realize that you really don't. She promises to come clean, and tell you the truth, but is she really? At the end, was the entire story just one big lie? Micah keeps you hooked, with every page, …

LIAR is a book about Micah, a girl for whom, and from whom, the truth doesn't easily come. Her family is crazy-odd, and not surprisingly she has problems fitting in at school and even at home.    Told in first person, Micah begins her story by warning us that she's a liar. She promises that while she can't stop lying to everyone in her life, that she intends to tell us the truth. I, personally, thought this untrustworthiness provided an interesting element to the story, and didn't …

Micah has always been different, and her habit of constantly telling lies is just one of the ways she gets through life. She's an outcast, nobody in her wealthy school. So when one of the most popular seniors, Zach, is murdered, and it comes out that Micah was secretly dating him, no one can seem to believe it. But that's only one small truth amidst an avalanche of lies that Micah has told throughout her lifetime in a desperate attempt to conceal the shocking, unbelievable truth about herself.   &nbs …

This was a very interesting read and it caused me to question and overthink everything the narratar said. The first third of the book was a little slow but it really picked up at the second section and I couldn't put it down from that point! The ending was a little abrupt though, and I wish more things had been clarified, especially about Jordan, but it really leaves the reader with questions and things to think about. Overall it was a satisfying read and I would be interested in reading a sequel!    …

The only honest thing Micah will ever tell anyone is that she's a compulsive liar, and she is--a very skilled one. She's tricked everyone from teachers and classmates to psychiatrists and her own parents into believing even the most outrageous lies--that she's a boy, that her father is an arms dealer, just to name a couple. But why? Because for Micah, lies are so much easier--to tell and believe--than the truth. When Micah's maybe-boyfriend Zach is killed, all Micah's lies start to get tangled up, …
