more like sirens than mermaids

I like mermaids. Sea Change by Aimee Friedman is a really beautiful example of how the mythical creature can really be reimagined to great effect.

I'm fairly certain the creatures found in this book are really more like sirens than mermaids, which might be part of why the book never clicked for me.

There's a lot going on in this book--girls being reborn as mermaids out of egregiously abusive lives, the sirens luring sailors to their deaths trope, and more besides--but none of it really gets full treatment. Possibly because this is the first in the series, possibly just because it's that kind of book.

I found Luce an unconvincingly narrator. Her voice never felt authentic for a fourteen-year-old and the plot was rather lacking with a lot of meandering and treading water so to speak.
