Vernon bookends this fictional account with the bare and well-worn facts of Billy the Kid's infamous escape from the Lincoln County jail, and his shooting death by Pat Garrett a few weeks later. In the Kid's short and violent life, these are the best-documented events, so Vernon wisely doesn't try to change or enhance the facts.    The story really takes flight in between as Vernon recounts the Kid's involvement in the Lincoln County war between competing groups of cattlemen, …

"What Vernon has done for us is to pull the background forward and drop the characters into it, creating more of a balance between the two than is generally found, and thus the story is more character study than western." To guys of a certain age, Billy the Kid is still a legendary figure because, at one time or the other, almost all of us strapped on our six-shooters and pretended to be him. He looked so cool in western movies and television shows that we didn't care that he was really one of life's bad guys.
