The gifts of the Magi

  • Dec 10, 2009
I picked this up at a used book sale because a back-cover blurb promised this was a"much better book" than Dan Brown's huge selling but I thought mediocre The Da Vinci Code. Rollins amps up the adrenaline rushes as the first half of the book is one cliff-hanger and confrontation after another. The good guys are a super-secret American "Special Forces" type of organization, called to the Vatican to team with a church leader and his niece who are on the trail of a worthy group of bad guys--a shadowy Dragon Court, a rogue branch of the Roman Catholic Church with roots in the Templar Knights. Both sides are in search of a secret associated with the Magi--yes, just in time for Christmas, we three kings of Orient are--at the center of modern mystery and mayhem!

Part McGyver and part Amazing Race, the protagonists have to resolve ancient riddles and battle violent ambushes as they journey around the Mediterranean. In the second half of the book, Rollins gives the reader a chance to catch his breath as he opens up more narrative about the history behind the riddles, but of course the final set-piece confrontation raises the tension to new levels at the climax.

So the praise on the back cover was correct, Rollins beats Brown in action, adventure, and ancient mystery.
