The Amazing Artistry of Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall: My Life, My Dream creates a perfect door to the artist over an 18 year period--34 pages of text and 234 pages of plates and discriptions of the plates. Bravo!

We learn how loved Chagall was as a child, raised in rthe loving Jewish tradespeople's community of Vitebsk, although in a world not so loving to his people. Chagall is described by teacher Hermann Struck as a "wild enthusiast who races like lightning with the unconscious energy of genius through all the different stages from that of naturalistic mastery of his everyday surroundings to that of mystic formulation...."

Marc Chagall's art and life seem seamleses and his images go through my eyes straight into my heart. Indeed, one of the titles of Chagall is "painter of the heart." His heart seems to me laid bare in every one of his renderings, whether etchings, drawings, lithographs, paintings in a variety of mediums on a variety of surfaces. With Chagall's art, I see a world transformed into images of red-yellow, blue and green as dominant colors.

How thoroughly Chagall delights. Chagall made 350 etchines over the 18 years covered in this book and the book's multitude of Chagall images makes it so much more pictorially exciting than Chagall's book of his first 35 years, My Life, written about his mostly Russian years. Chagall left Russia for good in 1922, not even returning for the funerals of his mother and father.

PS If you want to know about Chagall from Chagall, definitely read My Life.

Marc Chagall's modern version of the Sistine Chapel was the ceiling of the Paris Opera House! Have you seen it by chance? It's gorgeous.
