First, let me just say - Harry Dresden this is *not*. Comparing Peter Grant to Dresden is like comparing Wonder Bread (Grant) to Pumpernickel (Dresden). Totally different flavors, textures and presence. Having said that - there's absolutely nothing wrong with a little fluff every now and then, and Midnight Riot was enjoyable fluff.

Peter Grant is a "copper" - police over in England. He's just finishing his probation, ready to be assigned, when he ends up standing guard at a murder scene. That's where he meets his first ghost. From that meeting, things move fairly quickly and Peter ends up in a branch of police he's never heard of, doing things he's not sure he wants to do and meeting people (and Gods) he never knew existed. All while trying to stay alive and, maybe, help solve a crime spree that culminates in people's faces falling off.

There is a lot going on in the story - sometimes, maybe a little bit too much. I'm not sure if it's because this is the first book in a series with a lot of background to set, if it's because the author is inexperienced, or if it's maybe a little bit of both? But, it's not too much to follow and there are some very interesting characters. The characters themselves are, in some cases, not as fleshed out as I would like to see, but there were a lot of characters that came into play during this story - and I have a feeling that many of them will be back in the second book, giving the author more time to work on them.

It was a fun read, with a few laugh-out-loud moments. For me, this book would be a "Kindle" book vs. a "Hardback" book. In other words, I enjoyed reading it, I will probably look for the second one, but I wouldn't take up my valuable physical book space keeping it.
