Very few people of substance now question the importance of including multicultural aspects in the education of children. The only real issue is whether it should be done incrementally or in broader steps. This book is an example of an incremental approach, where a child can learn nine Spanish phrases in the context of searching for a lost dog. Juanito and his family have just moved to New York from Puerto Rico and he speaks only Spanish. Therefore, when his dog is lost the language barrier hampers Juanito's search. However, using examples and gestures and finding children willing to help, Juanito is able to make himself understood and to his joy, a kindly policeman reunites him with his lost dog. Children love and can relate to lost animals, making this an excellent scenario to use in introducing Spanish phrases. While learning the usual phrases like "Hello" is important, making the scene one of tension helps engage the children and increases the effectiveness of the learning.
