Falco and the Claudii

  • Apr 13, 2011
This book begins with a double tragedy in the life of Marcus Didius Falco: both his new-born son and his father die on the same day. The death of his father makes him a rich man, but the death of his son plunges both Falco and his wife into mourning. The only way to overcome his feelings is to get back to work, and conveniently a gruesome murder calls him to investigate.

This investigation takes him to several new locations in the area of Rome, particularly the Pontine marsh, famous for harboring outlaws and fatal diseases. Falco and his friend Petro look into the murder (and there is another one or more) and come across a family of brigands in the marsh who appear to be protected by someone important in Rome. The two friends determine to find out who this person is and why the protection is being given to these lowlifes.

There is the usual cast of colorful characters, and Falco's acerbic wit to entertain the reader. At the end of the investigation all is revealed, but the very end of the book may shock some faithful Falco readers. To find out what I mean, read the book; you won't be sorry, as this is a worthy 20th book in the Falco series. May there be many more!

Falco is an old friend. I first met him years ago with Silver Pigs, still one of my favorite history mysteries. I need to get back to him.
