"Big government makes us poorer; it does so by making us less moral. It undermines our work ethic; it rewards irresponsibility (through everything from mortgage bailouts to subsidized contraception); it promotes envy and greed; it creates enemy classes or groups (like the wealthy) and encourages us all to demonize them and take from them." - p. 54

The America I grew up is gone. When Barack Obama was elected President in 2008 he vowed to "fundamentally transform America". He sure has. Traditional American values such as individual freedom, equality of opportunity, religious liberty, self-reliance, competition and hard work have been replaced by a whole new ethos featuring crushing debt, increasing dependency on government, a President who props up our enemies and apologizes for America and an alarming culture of death. David Harsanyi is a nationally syndicated columnist who believes that the re-election of Barack Obama has set into motion forces that could well do irreparable damage to our nation. He has laid it all out for us in his disturbing new book "Obama's Four Horsemen: The Disasters Unleashed by Obama's Reelection". As you will discover, the challenges for those who oppose the Obama agenda appear to be overwhelming. The likelihood is that America will never be the same again.

So how did it happen? According to David Harsanyi there has been a fundamental shift, especially among young people, in how Americans view government's role in society that will be difficult, if not impossible to reverse. The dumbing down of America is now a reality. After years of indoctrination in America's elementary and secondary schools and in our institutions of higher learning it appears that a large percentage of our young people have bought the progressive agenda hook, line and sinker. Progressives have succeeded in embedding the entitlement mentality deep within our culture. For example, the author cites a 2012 report from the Congressional Research Service that found that welfare is now the single biggest federal expense--greater than Social Security, Medicare and National defense--with combined federal and state spending on welfare programs topping $1 trillion in 2011! Thank you Barack Obama! Today 1 in 7 Americans use food stamps. If you doubt that the Obama administration are the one's largely responsible for this you should know that in 2001 17.3 million Americans participated in the program. By 2011 that number had swelled to 46.2 million people. There is good reason to believe that there are now more Americans in the wagon than those who are pulling it and this is precisely what the progressives had in mind. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen has declared that "the biggest single threat to our national security is debt." We have a President and a Democratic party that could care less and perpetually chastise any Republican or conservative efforts to stem the tide as "mean-spirited".

Clearly the progressive agenda being espoused by Obama and his minions are being propped up by the lapdog press. Here is one example of the type of hard-hitting reporting we are getting from our friends in the mainstream media. Harsanyi reports that during a 2012 interview with Bloomberg's Al Hunt (a/k/a Mr. Judy Woodruff) Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was asked "Do you agree with Alan Greenspan (a/k/a Mr. Andrea Mitchell) that we ought to just eliminate the debt ceiling?" The incestuous relationship between big government and the media is everywhere. To these folks the debt ceiling is "an inconvenient truth" that needs to be marginalized and ultimately eliminated.

But there is a lot more to worry about than just debt and dependency (as if that were not enough). David Harsanyi spends a considerable amount of time focusing on Obama's rather unsavory foreign policy. Let's just say that with all of the bowing, apologizing and propping up of questionable regimes around the world one has to wonder just whose side this President is on. And how Barack Obama managed to get away with the events that took place in Benghazi on September 11, 2012 is simply unbelievable. We have a President who seems to be averse to due process, the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution. Once again, our media could care less. Then there is the culture of death that Obama and the Democrats succeeded in accelerating during the 2012 Presidential campaign. Sadly, it would appear that this is what the majority of American voters seem to want. Throwing caution to the wind, Democratic candidates from Obama on down championed the right of American woman to free contraception and taxpayer-funded abortions. The sight of the likes of Sandra Fluke addressing the delegates at the Democratic National Convention was nothing short of breathtaking! What in the world has become of the Democratic party? Over the past 40 years more than 50 million abortions have taken place in America which author Pat Buchanan believes will ultimately result in the "Suicide of a Superpower".

Over the past couple of years I have read a number of books chronicling the misery that the Obama administration and their progressive allies in Congress are foisting upon the American people. "Obama's Four Horsemen: The Disasters Unleashed by Obama's Reelection" is the latest offering and while I would characterize it as a worthwhile read it is not among the upper echelon of the books I have read thus far. Having said that, "Obama's Four Horsemen" is still an extremely readable offering and relatively short at just 157 pages. Those who have not read a lot about these issues can get up to speed in just a few sittings. And let's face it, the more Americans who become aware of what is happening in this nation the better the chance we have of weathering the storm. A solid four star effort. Recommended.
