The Best-Kept Secret About Law School

  • Jul 2, 2010
I got this book in preparation for my entrance into law school. I heard from others that it would be hard, but that was about as detailed as they got. I was finally recommended this book from one of my professors at the University of Washington so I jumped right on it.

The book is an autobiographical piece about Scott Turow’s first year experience at Harvard Law. In a few words, law school was hard. You know something is taxing when there is a psychologist on call, 24/7.  In reading this book I learned why law school is hard for first years. Everything about the place is stressful, from the competition amongst students, to learning a new way to read and write (legalese). Each class is stressful enough, with students required to learn qua the Socratic Method, where students are called upon cold and grilled by the professor about cases that were supposed to be read prior to the class session. Needless to say, Turow thinks that law school is a special club, and his writing comes off that way.

If you want an in depth, and moving, account of one person’s experience in learning the law, this is for you. However, what matters here is the bigger picture: lawyers are everywhere, and they all seem to think the same way, according to multiple sources. This book gives you a window to why.
