Naomi's struggle

  • Jul 18, 2009
'One Life' offers one woman's story of struggling with and ultimately recovering from an eating disorder. Eating disorders can be debilitating and often require years of treatment marked with setbacks and relapse. Because of this, reading someone's personal experience with an eating disorder can be an integral component of treatment for an individual suffering with an eating disorder. Outpatient and inpatient treatment often involves homework assignments; a treatment provider could certainly utilize 'One Life' as a treatment assignment for individuals suffering with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.

In sharing her personal recovery path, Naomi offers personal insights about eating disorders while sharing tools for treatment and recovery. She organizes her path in eleven steps, including rules from 'be honest' to 'relinquish control' to 'empower yourself.' Since substance abuse is often comorbid with eating disorders, individuals who benefit from the 12-Step framework may enjoy reading an 11-step toolbox for eating disorders, as this is a familiar approach to recovery. Naomi opens each step with 'how to,' and 'when to use this skill' paragraphs, followed by her personal experience with the step and skills. I would recommend that 'One Life' be available on a treatment professional's shelf; and I would recommend 'One Life' for individuals in the beginning, middle, or late stage of the recovery process.
