"Silence is not the absence of something, but the presence of everything." quotes the author Gordon Hempton. His personal mission is to find a place with natural soundscape with no external noise pollution and he goes to lengths traveling across the country and writing to governmental agencies in his quest. This book is an account of this quest to find a "square inch" of silence which is why it reads like part travelogue and part memoir with some philosophical musings from the author.    The …

I have an amateur interest in acoustic ecology and do some sound recordings of my own, so I was especially interested in reading Gordon Hempton's book, One Square Inch of Silence. In this book, Mr. Hempton makes a compelling case for the deterioration of our soundscapes - noise pollution pretty much covers the globe. He has started a campaign to make people more aware of our silent spaces - not literal or complete silence, of course, but any area that suffers no or the least amount of man-made noise …

I'm not sure how to categorize this book or exactly why it was written. Somehow that doesn't matter. Gordon Hempton is a keen observer and listener. His eye and ear for details humble me who has long thought of himself as a naturalist. He and his writer associate have presented those observations in a natural and engaging way. What this book has done is triggered me into paying a lot more attention to what I hear and how loud and or obtrusive many sounds that I was taking for granted can be.      …
